Ignorance Is Bliss!
WARNING: FAMILY MEMBERS, THIS MAY CAUSE YOU TO BECOME UPSET, BUT I HAD TO VENT.
This evening, something happened that I luckily hadn't had to face in 12yrs. One of the biggest fears I always had was that someday someone would make fun of Erin. Well, apparently, about 4 weeks ago, Alex was at a friends house and some other kid was there and they got into a verbal arguement, this kid(well, he is actually 18) told Alex "Why don't you go home and play with your retarded sister." Alex never once said anything to me about this. The only reason I found out was because I was talking to his friends mom and she was saying that she didn't like this other kid and then she told me what happened. She heard it and laid into the kid, he ended up apoligizing, but she told him that's not the point, he shouldn't be so ignorant to say something like that. She told her husband and he said that he was lucky that he was at work and didn't hear it, because he would have knocked the kid out. I asked Alex why he didn't tell me, he said he was too mad. He told his friends mom that he is very protective of his sister. I just have a wide range of emotions about this. I'm upset, pissed, I want to smack the kid. I'm also a little worried about Alex. I wonder if this is the first time this has happened. I never want him to have this burden, but I guess I knew that he would one day have to stick up for his sister. I'm also proud of him, he didn't lay a hand on the other kid. I haven't told Dan yet. I'm kind of afraid to. He will definately over-react. The sad thing is. This kid has only seen Erin once. I guess I should just accept that their are stupid people out there, but I guess I've been sheltered from it. I figure that we all adore her and everyone else should. Live and learn. I will definately be having a heart to heart with Alex about this one.
I'm sorry, but I needed to vent.

people are so damn ignorant...I am so sorry your son, you, your daughter...anyone...has to put up with such bigotry in this world
I am a special needs teacher, or was before I got sick, and I loved my job, I dealt with alot of ignorance in that field, other kids can be the cruelest...
you daughter is beautiful, I have alot more to read on here about you and your wonderful family...your son is a great kid who loves his sister and that is so cool :)
i don't even *really* know you guys but my heart is with you. reading this brought tears to my eyes. people are ignorant and it's likely they don't know what they are missing!
I read this and you know who I get angry at? That kids parents. How old is that kid? Children can be mean and cruel especially when they dont understand something. His parents should have taught him better than that!Did they never set him aside and talk to him about special needs children/adults?
I know I have with Aiyana and did so at a young age (probably about 3 or 4) and again as needed for refresher courses.
I'm sorry this happened. I guess not everyone can have great kids like you do and be so skilled in the parenting area like you are. ;)
Wait I just read he was 18 right? Good grief! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! >:(
Ami, you know that there are always going to be people who are just ignorant and don't understand. We know what an angel and a blessing she is. Be proud of Alex for not going off like I would have and his not telling you was to protect YOU from being hurt, which is a very adult thing to do. He's come a long way so be proud of him. I know I am.
The world being what it is, that stuff is bound to happen at times. That isn't fair, but it's the world we live in. Your daughter looks like a beautiful person. Thank God that you, and the people you love can see that.
As for the kid that made the comment, maybe this was the one time he said something like that. Maybe he'll learn his lesson. I hope so.
